Status: Invasive
American alligators are a type of large crocodilian with an armored body, short legs, a muscular tail and a long, rounded snout. This species of alligator is found only in the United States. Alligators are most aggressive during mating season and the subsequent months when they have a nest. This generally lasts from April to September, but an alligator can be dangerous and deadly at any time of the year. As a general rule of thumb, you should expect that an alligator can be found in any body of water in Florida, including lakes, rivers, canals, golf course ponds, and even the occasional backyard pool! It's important to note they also can be found in brackish water habitats.Alligators are most active when temperatures are between 82° to 92° F (28° to 33° C) because they are ectothermic. This means they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature such as the sun or water temperatures.
