New Tech in the Fight Against the Python Invasion: Burmese pythons continue to wreak havoc on the delicate ecosystem here in Florida. Though there have been over 19,000 pythons reportedly removed since 2000, there has still been an overwhelming decline of native species in the Everglades. Reports show a population decline of 99% for raccoons, 98% for possums, and 87% for bobcats. New technology has emerged from The South Florida Water Management District. They have unveiled a new python detection strategy using lifelike mechanical bunnies. These decoys are designed to mimic the movement, heat signature, and even the scent of real rabbits—three key cues pythons use to hunt. Each robotic rabbit will be paired with a camera system powered by artificial intelligence that can detect nearby pythons. When a snake is spotted, the system will alert wildlife officials to come and capture it.
